What Do You Think About Letting Your Child Listen To Rap Or Hip-hop?
I am 14 years old n I love rap and hip-hop music but my parents hate it, they think that it’s “not suitable” for me but I have always listened to it. So my question for other parents is would you let your daughter or son listen to rap or hip-hop?

Hey Moose ur daugther is a cheerleader u know dat her school’s football fa(kin her on their sight ?Huh so stop talking bull$hit,Hip hop and rap is the best music there is,and Weezy ,Kanye west and T.I. are the best.SO go girl and listen to it.=)
In my family, we all love all types of music. However, for protection of innocence, I do not allow my kids to have any music that is blatantly sexual. Though, a little innuendo never hurt anybody. I also prohibit anything that endorses killing people. There is good rap and hip-hop just as there is bad rock. The problems exist in many forms of music. For instance I love Neil Diamod but I do not listen to songs like Desiree around my boys. I had never thought about it until they were old enough to catch on to his phrase “ride, c’mon baby ride…”. If they are offended or feel funny about something they hear, then they should not listen to it, period. However, I do not believe in taking away artist’s (or anybody’s) free speech. They just cannot listen to the mature stuff until they are 18.
When I was growing up hip hop was still in it’s early stage (early 80’s). I listened to Snoop, Dre, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys. But when you get older, as a female you don’t want to hear *****, hoe, slut…. every other word, it gets old. So maybe when you mature a little more you won’t find that music so appealing. I do still listen to hip hop, but I’ve ventured on to real artists not that stuff you hear on the radio. The stuff played on the radio today is really disgusting and degrading towards women. You’re parents are right for not wanting their daughter’s head to be berated with degrading remarks constantly.
Personally; I think most hip-hop/rap sucks. but i do have a few songs
as long as it dosn’t influence you in a negative way like swearing, drugs, sex, gangs ect it shouldn’t be a problem
If anything maybe show your music is a positive influence.
like if your into painting put on your favorite rap song and create somthing great. if your into dance make a dance. if your on a sports team listen to it before a game (just be sure it pumps you up of course ^_~)
In our house we expose our kids to lots of different music. We play anything from Frank Sinatra to Metallica to Eminem. There are some songs we do not play around the kids because the content is to sexual. i was raised and my kids are being raised to believe music is just something you listen to because it sounds good or has a nice beat. Its not something to take serious.
I have listened to death metal since I was about 10 years old, I have yet to kill anyone or anything part of because of how my mom raised me. So if you raise your kids right music won’t influence them much if at all.
depends on what artirst yourlistening to
try this writing down the words in poem form and asking them what they think of the writer
explain what you like about the music
is it the beat or the words
compare the words from there generation of music which i am geussing is the 80′ maybe and explain that this the music of your generation and shouldn’t you be allowed to express your self now if the rap u like is about drugs and bitiches and hoes well
them stop listerning to that crap
the words do matter
not everyone has good parents like you and those kids hear crappy songs and believe it is the way to live
why should that matter to yo cause thease young men are in same world as you and who do you think is the ***** or hoe
if you and we keep making them rich they will keep writing about crap
every dime yo spend is giving your approval and ensuring that crap goes on and on
so bottome line depends on what your listening to
Thats a really hard situation. I was in your shoes when I was your age. My parents used to actually confiscate and break my rap CD’s. I think what parents have the problem with is the lyrics. Even as an adult who listens to rap, I think they can often times be disgusting and something no child should hear. Maybe sit down and come to a compromise and tell them that you will only listen to edited CD’s. I know it is lame, but it is compromising.
a lot of people here are really ignorant. Why wouldn’t you want your child to be open Minded about music? Not all rap is garage. I think as long as the music has a positive message, (like common and sometimes Nas – there are others, too) it’s ok. I’d say 14 is a great age to listen to rap/ hip hop.
It would seem to be practically impossible to monitor what you listen to every second of the day. That would be my main reason for not caring if I were a parent, although I probably wouldn’t put up with you listening to it to where I could hear it or in the car with me. And wouldn’t buy you cd’s and such.
I have 3 kids. (Arab and US decent…we’re all American though…I was a Marine as a young man…I’m the Arab).
Rap music: No, No, and No.
I’ve got 2 in college and one on the way. They’re all normal kids: Daughter cheerleads, and the 2 boys played HS football when they were in HS. Listening to that stuff is an insult. Your parents are right kid…pick something else.
hey I grew up with it. Im the 70-80’s When “push it” salt n pepa was out and easy e and etc. How could I even not let them hear it when I am ALWAYS listening to it in my radio, My kids are growing up to it now, I want them to.
If the message in the song is good I say listen to your hearts content. If the message in the song is not good I say it’s not suitable.
If you have raised your children right, they won’t want to listen to rap or hip-hop but, I wouldn’t let my kids listen to it because the lyrics are full or foul language and promote violence and crime.
Well your music unfortunatly is of the rap generation, you probably think your parents music sucks so just shoot right back at them!
why would it be up to the parents anyway? we’re going to listen to whatever we want anyway. lol
Its Okay As Long As You Know That Its Just Music…..
And Dont Be Influence By Everything You Hear
As long as it’s rap about the lord-baby-Jesus I don’t see any problem.
No….well if it were lyric driven then I would, but it was “I’m gonna make-up 50 words and then grunt” hip hop…..well that’s a blight on modern culture.
does rap and hip hop negatively affect teens? probably.
i would see if they could handle it and make the decision based on that
it depends. some artists make songs about booty shaking and all of that while others are deep and talk about life like the ones tupac made.
Yes I would, it’s good for your child to have their own opinion in music.
It is not a wise idea! Next comes rebellion!
there is good hip hop and then there is lil’ wayne
hiphop is da troof
